The Brief

Griffith University envisioned a welcoming, culturally significant space where Gumurri staff and students could collaborate and connect within a safe, inclusive environment. The project required a distinctive design to make the space easily identifiable to students while supporting a culturally appropriate learning atmosphere. The fitout needed to function seamlessly within a live campus environment, ensuring minimal disruption and prioritising student safety.

Our contribution

Under a Design & Construct (D&C) contract, we partnered with Studio LMD to create a purposeful design that met Griffith University’s vision. Engaging in continuous consultation with key Gumurri stakeholders, we ensured that cultural values and sensitivities were honored throughout the project. The fitout included a kitchenette, break area, two consultation rooms, an office, a student lounge, a quiet study zone, and a student work area. Throughout the design and material selection process, our team emphasised open dialogue, honoring both Griffith University’s and Gumurri’s specific needs. Despite working in a live environment, we completed the project stress-free, on time, and within budget.

The remarkable project outcome

The Gumurri Student Success Unit at Griffith University now offers a culturally respectful, functional space that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students across all stages of their academic journey. Located at the Nathan Campus, this vibrant hub blends style and functionality, promoting both social connection and focused study. With a modern, bold design, the space enhances student experience and encourages collaboration within a welcoming, culturally meaningful setting.
